Cruelty Free Cattle Management

Pretty CowLife is pretty slow paced on Evelyn Marie Farms. Our key principal to managing the health of our herd is relatively simple: minimize the stress on the breeding cattle and their calves whenever possible. Our cattle receive veterinarian care from a local vet annually and as needed throughout the year.

Several times each week, the cattle are trained using nutritional cube treats. The entire herd is trained to move about the farm by using these cube treats as a reward. This is how the cattle are enticed to move around from one paddock to the next and how they are corralled for vaccinations and needed medical care. Rarely does an animal need to be “herded” due to this continual practice of positive behavioral conditioning.

Water, grass and minerals

GrasshopperOur cattle are fed grass (a mixture of fescue, brome, and red clover), free choice all natural minerals, and pond and well water. They are raised without hormones or antibiotic feed additives.

We use rotational grazing methods and sustainable farming practices to support optimal cattle health and continual improvement of our farmland. The hay we use for winter feeding is grown on our farm.

Grass-fed whole, half and split half beefs

Evelyn Marie Farms is located in Creighton, Missouri on 160 acres that has been owned by our family since 1948. Our mission is to promote a direct relationship between the beef consumer and the small farmer. We sell whole, half and split half beefs directly to individuals.

Our beefs are grass-fed cows that are processed when they weigh between 800 and 1000 lbs. They are transported to and packaged by a local, family owned processing plant.

To minimize stress on the cows, they are transported in pairs when possible and boarded the night before processing. Hetherington Meat Processing is located just 20 miles from our farm and they are a member of the Missouri Association of Meat Processors.

What is in a split half?

Buying meat in bulk can seem confusing. Considering the “hanging weight” versus the “dressed weight” or the percentage of shrinkage and cost of processing can seem overwhelming to most people. We’ve made things as simple as possible.

A split half is approximately 1/4 of a cow and it contains cuts from both the front and rear quarters. A split half or “quarter” will weigh out to be about 75 to 95lbs of meat depending on the weight of the cow at the time of processing.

Approximately half of this beef will be hamburger and the rest will be various cuts of steak and roasts. Typical cuts are listed here. All cuts of beef are double wrapped, hamburger comes in one pound bags.

Our current sale price is $6.00 per pound for a quarter, $5.50 per pound for 2 to 3 quarters and $5.00 per pound for 4 quarters (a whole beef). We supply beef year-round; it usually takes approximately four weeks to process your order.  You will only pay for the packaged weight of the beef you receive.

A split half is considered a minimum order. Additional charges for delivery may apply. A deposit may be required.  We can only sell and transport our beef in the state of Missouri.  All sales are final.
